Something in the Last Week

I have no class this term so have more time for my hobby– entrepreneurship and music. I attended a technology lecture in last Wednesday and a one-day technology workshop in last Saturday.
The lecture was given by Brendon Howe, a BU alumni and the vice president of NetApp. Inc. a NASDAQ-listed storage company. To be honest, it was a little bit boring.

Mr Howe shared us his experience in both BU and NetApp. Since Howe grew up in the eastern coast, while NetApp Inc is a typical silicon valley company, I asked him about his opinion about the difference of east coast and west coast. I also ask whether he felt there is disadvantage for east coast graduates to find a job in high tech industry compared with west coast graduates as most of tech companies are silicon valley based.

His answer was that there are some difference, but the difference is not as large as people imagine. A east coast graduate student can easily adapt to the life in silicon valley. For the second question, he admitted that many companies are more willing to recruit local students, however, since globalization is the future trend, more and more companies set up their offices in the east coast, so this gap should be more or less bridged.

In terms of Saturday technology workshop, it was pretty much a MBA lecture. The workshop was organized by ITEC, acronym of Institute of Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization which is a very active technology organization under the school of management . About 30 students, mostly engineering and management students, joined the workshop. The students were divided into 5 groups to brainstorm biz ideas. Eventually each group will focus on one biz concept and try to draft a biz plan and give eight elevator pitch or biz presentation.

Our group focused on a gaming device in which you can control the avatars using your brain directly and watch game scenes through displaying glasses. It is actually a very interesting idea which can revolutionize the way people interact with gaming device. I eventually gave a elevator pitch. It was actually challenging for me since elevator pitch request very fast response which is harder for even native speakers. I tried to speak more passionate to overcomes the shortcoming of language and it seemed to work well.

For the music, I watched a very funny opera named secret marriage in Friday night. It was performed by BU students and free to all BU students, actually there is another good Boston Symphony Orchestra at the same time so I can only choose one. Choosing the opera turned to be not a bad idea. It says a young couple hide their marriage to the father of the wife. However, the betrothed husband of the wife’s sister falls into love with the wife, which make things complicated. The couple conspired to escape but was found. Eventually the young couple got permission of the wife’s father and show ends happily.
The only unhappy thing in the last week was research. The simulation results turned out to be crappy, so I switched to a new method, unfortunately the new method didn’t work, too. I stayed up last night but still didn’t get the result for meeting with advisor today, so the meeting is a little bit embarrassing as I made no progress in the past week. Anyway, research is only a small part of life.

MIT Sloan Asia Business Conference

Last Saturday, I attended the Sloan Asia Business Conference. Here is a brief summary of the conference.

The opening remark was given by Yasheng Huang, who is a faculty at MIT Sloan school of management. He just had a controversial talk about the development of India and China recently in TED2011 held in Edinburgh. In the talk, he attributed the success of China compared with India to the Human Capital—Better Literacy Ratio, Higher Life Expectation and less systematic discrimination of women.  He also points that it is not fair to compare with India with China, which is a superstar in terms of economic development. Actually the performance of India actually is quite impressive among the emerging countries, while the slow movement of political reform in China may potentially hinder the economic growth in the future. The link of the talk is: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/yasheng_huang.html

Lenovo Chief Marketing Officer.  David Roman

As the chief marketing officer of Lenovo Corporation, David Roman introduced the global campaign named “For Those Who Do” that aims to promote the visibility of of the “Lenovo” brand outside China.

Despite the sluggish PC-market worldwide, Lenovo maintains 2-digits growth in the past several quarters and jumped to 2nd largest PC Maker, passing Acer and Dellconsecutively. But an embarrassing fact is the although the compony is a household brand in China, few people in western world know it in spite of its ThinkPad Series.

It is actually a common problem for many Chinese companies–so called the invisible Giants. Few Westerners know Baidu, SinoPec, ICPC, yet they are actually real mammoths even in western standard.

Now Lenovo’s focus is its ThinkPad Series, which formerly belonged the IBM. The deal was unbelievable then, since IBM PC department was triple the size of Lenovo at that time in terms of revenue.

It took Lenovo several years to learn how to be an international company. Now it seems that it has learnt the trick. In terms of my personal experience in United States, Lenovo is the most well-knowned Chinese Brand in United States. There is still a long way for other Chinese brands to go in United States.

SVP Finance & CFO of Global e-Commerce and Global Sourcing. Andreas Schulmeyer

This is the keynote I like most. The reason I favor this keynotes towards others is that it contains a lot of data rather than objective opinions. One figure is the comparison of the total population and GDP of China and United States. The left figure is for population and the right figure is for GDP. I guess the y axis is the GDP per capica. An interesting phenomenon is that the US’s value is also low in 1960s. The data actually needs to be validated.

Customer relationship Online and offline. There are five most components in culstomer Relatinship..

1. Social Network 2. Content 3. User Experience of Online Shopping 4. Brand Name 5 Search Engine.

Another interesting figure is the growth of US and China’s retail section.

Yuan Wang

Yuan wang, a high-level official in Chinese Development Bank and a consutant of world bank, gave a keynote about Chinese Economic situation. Her talk was a little bit boring. As a representation of new-generation Chinese policy maker, Wang reflected the impression of Chinese officials on westerners–well-educated, with international view yet still have bureaucratic ways of doing things. Most of the new Chinese policy makers, especially in economic field, receive well education. Some of them have western background and can speak pretty good English. However, different with their counterparts in Western Countries, Chinese policy makers always give people a feeling of commanding. Maybe it is caused by the booming Chinese Economy. All the investors worldwide want to go to China for new opportunities, and as the door-keeper of this huge market, the Chinese economic policy makers take it granted for the decisive power they have to let foreigner go or not.

Allan Kwan

Allan Kwan is a partner of Oak Investment. Now he focus the Investment on Northern Asia region, mostly in in Internet and food & beverage Industry. Before joining the Oak Investment, he worked in Motorola and Yahoo! consecutively. In Yahoo,

he took charge of the acquisition of 3721 founded Hongyi Zhou, which turned out to be a disaster, and the investment of Alibaba. What interests me is that his original major was mechanical engineering. His trace is quite typical and a lot of Chinese Students follow this way. Go to U.S for a Engineering Degree and then switch to financial field. He is a quite nice guy and gave two keynotes. In the second keynote, he noted the case study of LianLian Pay, one company he has invested in China. He used this case to illustrate the difference between business in China and that in America. The biz model of Lianlian pay is to construct the selling network of pre-paied card in China. Different with U.S, all the phone bills are charged using pre-paied card–user use to buy a pre-paid charging card and use the password in the card to charge their account. Lianlian pay construct the selling networks by setting partnership with thousands of grceries and convience store around China.

Aardvark was shut down by Google.

Aardvark is a trial of social search. The basic idea is to find the best person you can ask instead of the best webpages. Aardvark is a very good idea, but after being acquired by Google in 2010, it seems that the team gave up this service–there was no change at all for the whole year.
The essence of of Aardvark is to help people to find the right person to ask the question. However, in Aardvark, people are hidden behind the algorithm. There is little interaction between the one who asks the question and the one who answers. It just make people feel cold and stiffly. That’s the reason why it fails.
Aardvark works like wiki. The contribution of members is the key factor that whether the community is sustainable or not. If there is no interaction between humans, how can then feel the sense of accomplishment? Who wants to work for machines without pennies? Don’t be stupid.

At the same, Quora emerged as a giant in the Q&A field. In Quora, people are pushed to the front, facing directly with humans instead of machines. Although the search in Quora is still about topic, not people. It is in the right direction. Give people more incentives by promoting interaction and acknowledgement.

After Page enrolled as CEO, Google has cut off a lot of programs, including the famous Google Lab. Google need to be more focused to win in the social war with Facebook, and all the distractions need to be cleared away, including Aardvark.

Of course, it’s reasonable for the benefits of Google. My point is that if you really want to make your idea reality, just don’t sell yourself to a big company. It makes no sense to expect big company to make your idea reality. I don’t means they will surely not, but just don’t keep high expectation on that since they have more “important” things to do. Also don’t expect you can make your idea reality within a big company, you are forced to do more “important” things under that environment.

Wish

Today is the day for Chinese College Entrance Exam(CCEE). Wishes all the students good luck!!

However, the cruel reality is that 90% students are doomed to lose the competition. It is the first lesson they will learn before growing up.

The competition in China, especially in rural area, is far more fierce than people’s imagination. I once talked with a Chinese Friend who originated from Beijing, where the situation is better, huh, only in comparison with other parts of China. Even he cannot believe there are some students need to got up at 5:30AM, study all day long until 11PM, without rest except for a little snap in the noon, let alone the American-born students who never spend one minute on their textbook at weekends.

I don’t support the reform of Chinese College Entrance Exam. You may not be able to understand why I favor such a sucking method of selecting talents, and why those students care College Entrance Exam so much? It is because it is the only chance for them to change their fate. For those Chinese students comes from poor family, it is impossible to apply universities abroad, impossible to get recommendation for independent admission through bribery, yet it is the only way in may places. They don’t have job arranged by parents or kinsfolks, lack the welfare that their peers could have in big cites. Even the college entrance exam is not fair enough, students in rural areas cannot enjoy as excellent training as their peers in big cites, but it is the most equal game those students can play in China.

I am a lucky guy that enjoy some of the advantages and I eventually survived the game. However, I know some friends who lose because of the disfavor of God. That’s a pity, but that’s the reality they have to accept.

Wishes all the students again.

Pursuit of Happyness

I have just finished watching The Pursuit of Happyness stared by Will Smith for the second time. I wasn’t that touched when first watching this movie 2 years ago, feeling the life in the movie was too far away from me.

However, with two more years of life experience now, especially the hardship I have gone through in America, I become realize that it is not that far, and it is actually the story of you and me, of every person who would like to pursue their dreams.

This movie is about the story of a broken salesman who suffered much from poverty and misfortune, yet he never gave up and tried every method to change his fate and turn out to be successful stoke broker.

There are two scenes that touched my heart the most. One is when Will Smith and his son was kicked out of the motel and had to spend a night at the restroom of the subway. The strong man, who had never gave up after so many hardship and pain, cried for the first time in the movie when stroking his lovely son’s head. He cried because of his feeling of powerless to provide himself and his loving son the happiness and freedom that Jefferson has noted in the declaration of Independence. The second scene is the last part of the movie when Will Smith got the job and rushed to the kindergarden to embrace his son. Light shed into the room and the life would  no long be dark. He cried again as his perspiration and persistence turn out make an impossible thing possible.

Few people can be as misfortunate as the hero of the movie, however, most of us have the experience when we feel powerless, especially when we are a small potato. Myself is an example. As my qualification exam turned out to be a fiasco, I was at the edge of losing the RA job to support myself and the qualification to continue my Ph.D study. I felt the sense of powerless at that time. However, thanks to my previous efforts and help from several professors, everything becomes OK now.

So whenever you get stuck into problems, just believe you can handle it and don’t give up, you will eventually figure it out.

Sentences From Outlier: The story of success

Everthing we have learned in outliers says that success follows a predictable course. It is not brightest who succeed. Nor is the success simply the sum of the decisions and efforts we make on our own half. It is rather, a gift. outlier are those who have been given opportunities and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them.

A Simple Spider for Researcher Ranking Project

A important issue in ranking researchers is to construct the citation network between researchers.  To achieve it, I need crawl the database of cictation data from HistCite Website, whose URL is http://www.garfield.library.upenn.edu/histcomp/index.html

I downloaded a python spider from web and revised it to make it useable. It is not perfect but enough for this project. It is really cool to watch command windows scrolling down and downloading thousands of papes. Wow, is it so called geek behaviour?

Draft of my Report about ReRank Project.

link

This is the draft of my report about ReRank Project. It is sketchy but includes most points.

My basic idea is to transfer ranking problem into a network optimization problem.  Other guys have proposed an entropy maximization scheme to rank web pages in WWW, which is more fair then PageRank that Google uses. I borrowed this framework and analyzed the citation network formed by papers. Then I modeled the relation between researchers and papers with Bipartite Graph. By maximizing entropy again, I got the most general indicators of researchers’ popularity and influence.
The attachment is a brief summary of my idea. It’s highly appreciated if you can view it briefly before the discussion.
This is only basic idea of theoretical framework, there is long way to for before getting any meaningful result.
I will update it if I revise it later.

ReRank Algorithm Progress Mar 17

Do you remember the idea of  Ranking Researchers? I spent the whole spring break to explore that idea.
I read some articles about H-index, which is a research ability indicator used by Science and Nature. H-index can be summarized as: “the h-index of a researcher is h if he has exactly h papers whose citations are above h. “. Actually it only makes use of very limited information. Although the ignorance of large information make it robust and invulnerable for manipulation in some senses, it is disputable because the information filter is ugly defined by humans. In fact, we can define many h-index like indicators with different rank orders. It is impossible to justify which is the most fair one.
Another method to rank researchers is to use citation analysis. Similar methods have been widely used in ranking webpages—probably the most famous one is the “PageRank” algorithm that powers Google. The essence idea of PageRank Algorithm is to calculate stationary probability distribution of random walk with surfer follows each out-link with equal probability.
PageRank works very well in ranking webpages. Yet it also relies on an assumption:”The surfer follows each out-link with equal probability”. The most fair ranking system should based on facts only and not rely on any human-defined assumption.
After removing this assumption from PageRank algorith, we get TrafficRank Algorithm.
The key ideas of TrafficRank Algorithm is to derive the most general(uncertain) conclusion of ranking order based on the existing information. Because the uncertainty of a system is characterized by entropy, it is actually an optimization problem to maximize the entropy. You can refer paper “A New Paradigm for Ranking Pages on the World Wide Web” by John A. Tomlin or the report I will post later for detail.
Both PageRank and TrafficRank target on webpages. Ranking researchers and ranking webpages share some characteristics, but they are different.
Webpages are connected only by link, while the relationship between researchers are much more complicated. My goal in the following days will be characterizing the relation between researchers with the suitable network model.

The Long Tail of Labor—Influence of Crowd Sourcing on Labor Market

Author: Jing Conan Wang

Email: hbhzwj

Webpage: sites.google.com/site/wangjingpage

Abstract: This article describes the influence of Crowd Sourcing and Human Computation on the Labor Market. Crowd Sourcing and Human Computation help to break the large job which previously finished by employee into small tasks which will be distributed and accomplished by a crowd of people in a pleasant and rewarding method. As a result, it will increase the tail of labor market to a great extend and generate an extremely large commercial opportunity.

Long Tail dominates the Internet. Many interesting things happen when the entering threshold of a specific field approaches zero and thus generating a extremely long tail. For example, The success of Google Adwords and AdSenses owes to the long tail of Advertisement. The essence of long tail is to generate large profits from small needs.

Usually if you want to have a jobfinished. You need to hire an employee, sign contract with him, provide a working place, train him, describe the job to him and eventually pay money to him. It is very complicated. One benefit of such complexity is that employers are less willing to fire a person he hired because it will cause extra soaring cost of hiring new person. As an definite “employee”, I must thanks to the person who create this process as it protects me better than federal labor law.

Example of Cleaning your office

but at the same time, it also means that employers are less willing to hire person for small tasks. You may think your office is dirty, but except for the case that the office is dirty enough( the degree of “enough” depends on personality ), you would not like to hire a new cleaner. In this case, the threshold, namely the cost of cleaning the room by hiring a cleaner by yourself, is very large. The head of this market is those big companies which really have the needs to recruit cleaners by themselves.

Cleaning Company reduce the cost by maintains employee and employer relationships by themselves and you outsource your tasks to him. In this way, the cost of cleaning your office is reduced and the tail is thus extended.

What if a strange job? The tail of job

But that’s not enough. Cleaning room is a common task whose needs are large enough to support a company. What if you want find someone to “steal vegetables” for you in Happy Farm Game in 4AM everyday? I thinks less than 1 out of 10,000 people may have the similar need with you, and another 1 out of 10,000 people are willing to do that for a pay.

I don’t think there would be company to whom you can call to help you “steal vegetables” in 4AM every day. But in Internet Age, there is still way to meet your need, you can post the task in a website (these kind of website is not popular yet) and person who have interests can contact with you. Maybe a boy who lives 3 blocks away from your home may send you email saying that he is willing to do that for a 9 dollar hour-wage. The tail is extended for another time.

I just said “maybe”, personally I believe it is still highly possible that you get no response because few people can bear this work for more than a month. So why not break the tasks to smaller ones and hire person to “steal vegetables” for only one day? It will be much easier to find a person happens to be awake in 2 AM for a specific day(I often stay up in Friday so it is no bad to gain some bucks by clicking mouse for several times that day).

The general trend is that job is broken into many tiny parts which can be outsourced and finished by many people. In this way, the gap between demand and supply was greatly reduced. Here comes the questions, which kind of jobs can be broken, how to break these jobs, how to find people who are willing to do those and assign each part to them in a optimal way?

Unfortunately, the rule of “breaking” is not applicable for many jobs. For example, it is impossible for you to change your baby-sitter everyday, you don’t like that and your baby would not, too.

But there are still some applications. For example, wikipedia has proved that multi-person cooperation can generate high quality report. Yahoo Answer has proved that Internet can take place of consulting as least partially. Actually, most of the office work can finished by a crowd of people connected to Internet, so called “Crowd Sourcing”. That is to say, crowding sourcing and eliminate the job of most white collars.

People don’t need to sit in office building formally. Instead they only need to do what they want in Internet, like playing games, listening to music and so on. And they will finish other people’s tasks indirectly and get paid. THAT SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!

Why it is a revolution. How large the opportunity is?

The world of long tail is a world of monopoly, that is to say, the long tail of each specific field is always dominated by small number of companies. For example, Google dominates the long tail of Online Ad, Ebay dominates the long tail of E-commerce, so on and so forth

Although the total price of each task is tiny, the long tail can account for the 40% or more of the total value because of their massive number. Each year, hundreds of billions of money are invested into office-related jobs. That’s to say, the dominate company will have sales volumes of 40% of these hundreds of billions dollars, which amounts to at least 100,000,000,000$!! It would be a giant like Google and Apple.

When will it become a reality. What’s the problem make it impractical nowadays.

People do the things they like, and they get enough payment to support themselves. It seems to be utopia! However, this scenery is still impractical now, mainly because the technical limitation.
Both Crowd Sourcing and Human Computation is still in their early stage. Luis von ahn, the creator of human computation concept and the inventor and many games with purpose, also admitted that human computation game can only be used in a small range of field like image labelling, and he don’t know how to develop an general framework, either.
I think the development of human computation and crowd sourcing is closely related to Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining. Maybe it still takes another 5-10 years for this field to have significant breakthrough.
